| There are many things to think about before bringing a pet into your family. The habits and activities that you are currently involved with and the ones that you expect in the near future can affect the type of pet that is best suited for your home. The members of your families and any special needs that might currently exist (such as allergies) will also be factors. Before choosing a pet to add to your family, take some time to research and understand the different choices that are available. Then weigh the needs of the animals with the needs of the family to find the perfect fit. Best first pet Rodents are probably the best “first” pet for anyone to own. They have short lifespans and are not long-term responsibilities. They can be kept in a relatively small area and are typically easy to maintain (needing little interaction, especially when kept with others). Keeping rodents (like gerbils and hamsters) can be a good way for children to learn the responsibility of feeding and caring for a pet on a regular basis. Easiest pets to care for Fish are another easy-care choice. Although maintaining a health tank does require some consistency, the pets themselves do not need constant affection or attention. Freshwater tanks are usually less expensive to set up and easier to maintain, and make a good first option for pets. Starting with a tank that is about 20 gallons will allow for plenty of fish choices for the beginner. Long-term pet investments Cats and dogs are the typical pets that every homeowner thinks about when the subject comes up. Most of the breeds have a lifespan of ten or more years, so these pets are long-term investments. Unusual pets to consider Snakes and other reptiles are unusual choices for pets, but can be good for beginners. Garter snakes are easy to care for and typically gentle. Many other reptiles have unique personalities and traits that make them fun, but easy, to maintain. Birds are a great pet choice for people who live apart from other dwellings. They are long-term pets, with some having lifespans up to 100 years. Many breeds also require a large amount of time. Choosing a pet for your home should not be done lightly. You need to think about what your future holds (whether there will be children, a move or some other major change) and let that be a factor when considering pets. It is also important that you do some research on the individual pets you are considering. Understand the needs of a pet (such as space, socialization, and food) so that you know if these needs are within your means. The more you understand about your potential pets, their personalities and problems, the better home you can provide for them. |
